Awami League leader beaten to death in Bogura

An Awami League leader from the now-banned party has allegedly been beaten to death over a long-standing dispute involving land and grazing fields in the remote Jamuna River char area of Sariakandi Upazila in Bogura.

The attack took place on Monday night in the Nantur Mor area of Pakuria Char under Kajla Union.

After being critically injured in the assault, the victim was taken to the hospital, where he died on Tuesday morning.

The deceased, Mokhlesur Rahman, also known as Moslem Pramanik, 62, was a retired member of the Bangladesh Army. He served as the president of Ward No. 7 Awami League in Kajla Union.

According to police and local sources, Mokhlesur Rahman had been involved in a long-running dispute with local residents over land ownership and grazing rights in Pakuria Char.

While returning home from Pakuria Bazar, he was allegedly ambushed by rival individuals near Nantur Mor and severely beaten around 8pm on Monday.


Local residents rescued him and first took him to the Sariakandi Upazila Health Complex. He was later transferred to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital in Bogura, where he succumbed to his injuries around 7am on Tuesday while undergoing treatment.

Sariakandi Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) A F M Asaduzzaman said the attack stemmed from a previous dispute over char land. He added that efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved in the assault.
