Awami League leader detained from son's wedding ceremony

Students detained Fakhrul Anwar, the industry and commerce secretary of the North District Awami League, from his son's wedding ceremony at a community center in Chattogram city. He was later handed over to the police. According to news spread on social media, Bangladesh Tariqat Federation Chairman and former MP Syed Nazibul Bashar Maizbhandari and recently former MP Khadijatul Anwar Soni were also present at the wedding ceremony.

Fakhrul was arrested from the Navy Convention Center in Chittagong city at around 11:30 pm on Saturday (February 1). Deputy Commissioner of City Police (North) Muhammad Faisal Ahmed confirmed the arrest.

Faisal Ahmed said, "Awami League leader Fakhrul Anwar has been arrested from a wedding ceremony at a community center in the city. He has been taken to the police station. The case against him is being examined and sorted out.’

He said, ‘We kept him under surveillance as soon as we received the news. The leaders and activists of the anti-discrimination student movement also went there. And it was heard that former MP Najibul Bashar and Khadijatul Anwar Soni were there. But this is not true.’

Fakhrul Anwar is the younger brother of former MP from Fatikchhari, late Rafiqul Anwar. He is also the uncle of former MP Khadijatul Anwar Soni.

Several eyewitnesses present at the wedding ceremony said that many leaders and activists of Chattogram North District Awami League were present at the wedding ceremony. However, most of them left after seeing the situation.

Incidentally, the granddaughter of the son of former Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor M Manjur Alam got married to the son of Awami League leader Fakhrul Anwar. The wedding ceremony was organized on Saturday night at the Navy Convention Hall in the Tiger Pass area. The current CCC Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain was also present as an invited guest at the ceremony. Although former Mayor M Manjur Alam was present at the wedding ceremony of his granddaughter, he quickly left the convention center during the incident.
