Awami League leader dies while in Narayanganj jail custody
A Awami League leader has died while in custody in Narayanganj district jail.
The 55-year-old Humayun Kabir died at 7 am on Tuesday (January 13) at the National Heart Institute and Hospital in the capital.
Humayun Kabir, a resident of Galachipa area of Narayanganj city, was the former president of the panchayat committee of that area and the vice-president of ward number 13 of Narayanganj Metropolitan Awami League. He is the son of the late Chan Sharif Sardar.
According to prison sources, he was taken to the Narayanganj 150-bed General Hospital after he suddenly fell ill around 9 pm on Monday. Later, when his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to the National Heart Institute and Hospital in the capital for better treatment at night. He died while undergoing treatment there.
According to the family's claim, on December 18, 2024, Narayanganj Sadar Police arrested Humayun Kabir. Although there was no case against him at first, he was later arrested in a case related to the anti-discrimination movement. Since then, he has been imprisoned in Narayanganj District Jail.
Jail Superintendent Forkan Wahid said that he was first sent to a local hospital when he suddenly felt chest pain, and later, when his condition deteriorated, he was taken to the National Heart Institute. He died while undergoing treatment there.
