Former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar has been acquitted of 17 years in prison in a case filed over the recovery of weapons from his house.

A High Court bench comprising Justice Mostafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasrin Akhter delivered the verdict on Wednesday (March 19), said Babar's lawyer Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir.

Incidentally, Lutfozzaman Babar was arrested on May 28, 2007 during the former caretaker government. The case was filed with Gulshan Police Station on June 3 of the same year after illegal weapons and bullets were recovered from the bedroom of his Gulshan residence.

After the trial in the arms case, the Special Tribunal sentenced Babar to 17 years in prison on October 30 of the same year. However, Babar appealed to the High Court against the verdict in 2007. After the hearing of that appeal, the verdict was set for Wednesday.
