Baby girl sold for Tk 20,000 by mother, rescued after grandmother's complaint
A one-month-old baby girl was allegedly sold by her mother for Tk 20,000 in Boalkhali, Chattogram. The child was later rescued by police after an investigation prompted by a complaint from her grandmother.
The child was rescued late on Saturday (August 1) night from the Bardighir Par area of Hathazari upazila.
According to details, the mother, Roksana Begum (18), was married to Md Rakib (18), a CNG auto-rickshaw driver. The couple's daughter was born on June 20. Roksana later went to visit her parents' home with the child.
Rakib's mother, Firoza Begum, said on July 27 she was informed that her granddaughter had died and had been buried. When she visited the house the following afternoon, Roksana's family members gave evasive answers and could not show her the grave. She then filed a complaint with the police.
Boalkhali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mozaffar Hossain said the child was found in the care of a childless couple in Hathazari and was handed over to her parents on Sunday (August 2) morning after legal procedures.
