The fire that broke out in the basement of the Capital Siraj Center building on Bailey Road has been brought under control.

Nine units of the fire service have managed to bring the fire under control after an hour of effort.

No casualties have been reported so far and 18 people have been rescued alive from the building.

Fire service's media cell said that the fire broke out in the basement of the multi-storey building at 6:47pm on Monday (May 5).

The fire service control room said that the first unit reached the spot at 6:58pm after receiving the news of the fire. Initially, three units started working, but later six more units joined the effort.

Fire service personnel brought down the people trapped on the roof of the building to safety. Among the 18 rescued, there are seven men, nine women and two children.

There are various types of shops including clothing and cosmetics on different floors of the Capital Siraj Center building. However, it is not yet confirmed where the fire started.

Earlier on February 29 last year, 46 people died in a terrible fire at the Green Cozy Cottage building on Bailey Road. Many died of suffocation due to smoke when a fire broke out while eating at several restaurants. Women and children were among the dead.

Today's fire has spread fresh panic throughout the surrounding area.
