Bandarban tourist destinations reopen after nine-day closure
After a nine-day suspension due to adverse weather and flood risks, tourist destinations across Bandarban reopened to visitors on Thursday (July 16), with the exception of Debotakhum in Rowangchhari, which will remain closed until Tuesday for safety reasons.
The Bandarban district administration had suspended access to all tourist spots from July 7 following heavy rainfall, flash floods and landslides that threatened public safety.
Officials said visitors can now travel to approved destinations in Ruma and Thanchi upazilas, subject to existing regulations, including prior approval from the administration and the use of registered tour guides.
According to the district administration, 204 tourists were stranded in remote areas of Ruma and Thanchi after ignoring the travel restrictions during the flooding. They were later rescued in separate operations conducted by the Bangladesh Army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and police.
Thanchi Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Md. Abdullah Al-Faisal and Assistant Commissioner of the District Tourism Cell SM Hasan Shahriar said that weather conditions have remained stable for the past three days, floodwaters have receded and damaged roads have been repaired, allowing normal travel to resume.
Rowangchhari Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Tajmin Alam said, "However, Debotakhum will remain off-limits until Tuesday after heavy rain and landslides damaged infrastructure at the popular tourist site."
Authorities have urged visitors to strictly follow safety guidelines and comply with all travel regulations while visiting the hill district.
