Bangladesh ambassador attends swearing-in of Nepal's interim PM
Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Nepal, Md Shafiquar Rahman, attended the swearing-in ceremony of Sushila Karki, who took oath as the Prime Minister of Nepal’s interim government and exchanged greetings with the new leader, the Bangladesh Embassy in Kathmandu confirmed.
Earlier on Friday (September 12), former Chief Justice Sushila Karki took oath as interim leader following the resignation of Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli amid weeks of violent anti-corruption protests.
President Ram Chandra Paudel administered the oath at the presidential palace.
Nepal’s Parliament has been dissolved just hours after Sushila Karki was sworn in as the country’s Interim Prime Minister, with fresh elections scheduled for March next year.
Also present at the event were Nepal’s Vice-President Ram Sahay Yadav, Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Rawat and Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel. According to the President’s Office, Karki’s appointment was finalised after consultations with both the Army Chief and protest leaders, who themselves had proposed her name for leadership.
At least 51 people have been killed and more than 1,300 injured in the week-long protests, largely driven by the youth and dubbed the ‘Gen Z movement’. Demonstrations began after a controversial decision to ban social media, which was later revoked. Unrest, however, persisted until Oli’s resignation on Tuesday.
Sushila Karki, who earlier served as Nepal’s Chief Justice from 2016 to mid-2017, is widely recognised for her integrity, firm stance against corruption and decisive leadership.
