Bangladesh Bank warns against sharing misleading videos or images using 'sample notes'
Bangladesh Bank has issued a special warning against spreading misleading videos and images using 'sample notes' on social media. The central bank said that these activities are increasing the circulation of fake notes and putting the overall monetary system at risk.
This urgent warning was issued in a notification signed by the bank's Assistant Spokesperson for Communications and Publications Department, Saida Khanam, on Monday February 16.
The notification said that some videos and images are being seen on various social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, where marketing campaigns or content are being created using 'sample notes' similar in design and size to the real notes. In addition, cases of business campaigns using paper resembling real money in the market or open places are also being observed.
Such activities are destabilizing the overall monetary system by helping to increase the circulation of fake notes. The notification further states that making, using or promoting paper that resembles real notes is a punishable offense. According to Section 489(e) of the Bangladesh Penal Code, 1860, legal action will be taken against the individual or organization for doing such activities.
In addition, spreading false or misleading information through digital media is a punishable offense under Section 25 of the Cyber Security Act, 2023. The public has been advised to be vigilant in preventing the circulation of fake notes and to refrain from creating misleading content and unauthorized propaganda.
