Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has said that alongside protecting independence and sovereignty, the army has stood by the people during the July uprising and the ongoing state reforms, honouring the trust placed in them. He noted that as a peace-loving nation, Bangladesh believes in dignified and global coexistence with friendly states. However, he said the country must always remain prepared to defend itself against any aggressive attack by external enemies.

He made these remarks on Friday November 21 at an event organised at Senakunja in the capital on the occasion of Armed Forces Day.

He further said the upcoming election is extremely important for the country’s democratic transition. The armed forces will have to play a vital role in this election, through which Bangladesh will move towards a new future. The chief adviser urged everyone to work together to make the election atmosphere joyful and festive.

He also highlighted the importance of the skills and development of the armed forces. The chief adviser said the capability and efficiency of the forces were not enhanced during the fascist regime, but the current interim government is already working on this. As a result, the country’s defence capacity has increased significantly.

Regarding the contribution of Bangladeshi peacekeepers to the United Nations, he said personnel from Bangladesh are currently serving in 10 missions. Bangladesh is a major contributor of women peacekeepers, and Qatar will also recruit personnel from Bangladesh. These are matters of pride for the nation.

At the beginning of his speech, the chief adviser expressed sorrow and grief over the casualties caused by the sudden earthquake in Dhaka. He then commemorated the martyrs of the Liberation War and those killed in the 2024 uprising.
