Bangladesh condemns Houthi declaration of naval blockade against Saudi Arabia

Bangladesh has strongly condemned the Yemen-based Houthi rebels' declaration of a naval blockade against Saudi Arabia, calling for the continued freedom and security of international maritime navigation.

The position was outlined in a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday (22 July).

According to the statement, such a move would further escalate tensions in the Middle East, undermine regional peace and stability, and pose a risk to international maritime trade. Bangladesh reaffirmed its support for the uninterrupted and lawful passage of vessels through all international sea lanes, including the Red Sea, in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and international law.

The ministry noted that any disruption to shipping in the Red Sea—one of the world's most important routes for global trade and energy supplies—could have serious consequences for the global economy. It therefore stressed the importance of ensuring the safety and security of all seafarers and commercial vessels.

The statement also urged all parties to comply with their obligations under international law, refrain from actions that could jeopardise maritime security, and pursue diplomatic dialogue to resolve the crisis.

Expressing deep concern over the continuing instability in the Middle East, Bangladesh reiterated that dialogue, diplomacy and peaceful negotiations remain the only sustainable means of resolving conflicts.
