Bangladesh keen to join UN peacekeeping in Russia-Ukraine buffer zone: Foreign Adviser
Bangladesh has expressed interest in participating in United Nations peacekeeping operations in the buffer zone that may be established between Russia and Ukraine if a peace agreement is reached.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain shared this while speaking at the Foreign Ministry on Wednesday (September 10).
The adviser said, “There is nothing to announce at this stage. We hope there will be a ceasefire. If so, the United Nations will play a role. Bangladesh has experience in peacekeeping, and we would like to participate in any such operation.”
NBC News reported that the United States is expected to lead monitoring of the buffer zone, with possible deployment of troops from non-NATO countries such as Bangladesh or Saudi Arabia to provide additional security.
A Foreign Ministry official clarified that Bangladesh’s policy is to participate only under UN-led operations. While some Bangladeshi troops serve abroad under bilateral arrangements, the country prefers peacekeeping missions conducted by the United Nations.
Touhid Hossain also commented on the Bangladesh-India Joint Rivers Commission meeting in New Delhi, saying he had not yet received updates on the outcomes.
