Bangladesh names Ariful Islam as next Ambassador to US
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced the appointment of Tareq Md. Ariful Islam as Bangladesh’s next ambassador to the United States.
Ariful Islam is currently serving as the Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations Office in Geneva. He will replace Asad Alam Siam, who recently assumed the role of Foreign Secretary, leaving the ambassadorial post in Washington vacant.
A veteran diplomat, Islam previously served as Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and held key positions at the country’s missions in New York and Kolkata. He is a member of the 17th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Foreign Affairs Cadre).
In addition to his overseas assignments, Islam has served as Director General of the South Asia Wing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where he played a significant role in regional diplomacy.
His appointment comes amid efforts to deepen Bangladesh–U.S. relations across trade, security, and climate cooperation.
Islam is expected to assume his new responsibilities later this month.
