Bangladesh reaffirms commitment to global peace at UN Independence Day event
Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman has said that since joining the United Nations, Bangladesh has adopted multilateralism as the cornerstone of its foreign policy. He reaffirmed the country's commitment to global peace, security and cooperation.
He made the remarks as the chief guest at a reception hosted by Bangladesh's Permanent Mission to the UN in New York on Thursday, March 26, marking the country's 56th Independence and National Day. The information was shared in a message received in Dhaka on Saturday, March 28.
Around 150 permanent representatives, senior UN officials and members of the diplomatic corps attended the reception.
The foreign minister said Bangladesh has been contributing continuously to peacekeeping since joining the UN in 1974. At the same time, it has continued providing humanitarian assistance for Rohingyas.
He noted that despite various challenges, Bangladesh has achieved significant socio-economic progress over the past five decades through constructive engagement in line with the UN Charter.
In his welcome address, Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, said March 26 is not just the birth of a nation, but a symbol of the people's willpower, dignity and the eternal victory of independence.
Earlier, a discussion was organised at the mission's auditorium, where messages from national leaders were read out and a special documentary highlighting the significance of Independence Day was screened.
