Amidst various crises and challenges in the country's industrial sector, reassuring news has come on readymade garment exports. According to the WTO's World Trade Statistical Review 2025, Bangladesh remains the world's second largest garment exporter for the fifth consecutive time.

While global garment exports have declined somewhat, China remains at the top position. Vietnam ranks third, India fourth and Turkey fifth on the list.

According to the report, Bangladesh exported $38.82 billion worth of readymade garments last year, nearly $2 billion more than its closest rival Vietnam.

However, Bangladesh's exports increased by about 1 percent year-on-year, whereas Vietnam recorded growth of about 11 percent.

Economist Mahfuz Kabir said Vietnam is catching up fast. At the same time, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Cambodia are also strengthening their positions in the competition. So to maintain the second position, Bangladesh must increase automation in production alongside further strengthening its competitiveness.
