Bangladesh will enforce a complete ban on single-use plastics (SUP) inside the Secretariat from Sunday (October 5), in what officials describe as a model step for environmental and public health protection.

Security checks will be carried out at all entry points, with plastic bags and bottles seized and replaced by paper alternatives. Awareness boards and posters have been installed, and a monitoring team formed to oversee compliance.

The Cabinet Division has already instructed all ministries and agencies to abandon SUP in meetings, seminars, and events, mandating the use of jute, cloth, or reusable items.

Government procurement policies will also prioritize eco-friendly alternatives.

Each ministry has been asked to appoint a focal person and form a monitoring committee. Reusable containers and paper-based items will be supplied for staff and official programmes.

An Environment Ministry official noted: “The Secretariat is the nation’s administrative hub. A successful ban here can set an example for the entire country.”

The government aims to declare the Secretariat fully SUP-free within the week.
