The Bangladesh High Commission in India hosted a diplomatic dinner in New Delhi on Thursday evening, seeking support from International Maritime Organization (IMO) member states for Bangladesh’s re-election to the IMO Council.

The event, held as part of Bangladesh’s ongoing diplomatic campaign, brought together ambassadors and senior diplomats from various countries ahead of the upcoming IMO Council elections.

In a press release issued on Friday, the Ministry of Shipping said the purpose of the dinner was to strengthen international support for Bangladesh’s candidacy in Category ‘C’ of the IMO Council.

Bangladesh was first elected to the IMO Council in 2023, receiving 128 votes to secure a seat in Category ‘C’. This category includes countries with special maritime interests and ensures equitable geographic representation in the 40-member Council, which plays a central role in shaping global maritime policy.

The IMO is the United Nations' specialized agency responsible for regulating international shipping. It sets global standards for maritime safety, environmental protection, security, and seafarer welfare—factors that significantly impact global trade and economic development.

Speaking at the event, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Shipping Mohammad Yusuf highlighted the growth of Bangladesh’s maritime sector and the rising importance of its ports in facilitating international trade.

Commodore Mohammad Shafiul Bari, Director General of the Department of Shipping, presented an overview of Bangladesh’s maritime achievements and future plans. Deputy High Commissioner Preeti Rahman also addressed the gathering.

The event reflected Bangladesh’s active diplomatic outreach and its strategic efforts to retain a seat on the IMO Council in the upcoming elections.
