Bangladesh to seek details on 36 Bangladeshis detained in Malaysia
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will formally request detailed information from Malaysian authorities about 36 Bangladeshis recently detained on suspicion of terrorism, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Towhid Hossain said.
He added that while the full situation is not yet clear, some of the detainees may face charges in Malaysian courts, and others are expected to be deported back to Bangladesh.
“The matter is under close observation, and clearer information will be available in the coming days,” Towhid Hossain said.
According to reports quoting Malaysia’s Home Minister, the arrests were made due to alleged links with the Islamic State (IS). The news was first reported by BBC Bangla.
If deported, the Bangladesh Ministry of Home Affairs will investigate the individuals’ possible involvement with terrorist organizations, the adviser said.
Regarding concerns that the incident might affect future visa processes for Bangladeshis traveling to Malaysia, he said, “Any negative event impacts visa procedures, but with proper measures, its effects can be minimized.”
