Bangladesh, US sign MoU to boost energy cooperation
Bangladesh and the United States have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen energy security and strategic cooperation. The agreement was signed at the US Department of Energy in Washington DC on Thursday, May 14.
Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman signed on behalf of Bangladesh, while US Energy Secretary Chris Wright signed for the United States, according to a press release from the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington.
Ongoing conflict in the Middle East has created global uncertainty over energy security. The MoU will play a significant role in ensuring Bangladesh's energy supply and security, the embassy said.
Under the MoU, the two countries will enhance cooperation in oil, gas, geothermal and bio-energy sectors. The agreement will also facilitate knowledge and technology exchange, research activities and capacity development.
The MoU will also support the import of affordable LNG, LPG and other energy products from the United States, the embassy said.
Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman described the MoU as a new milestone in Bangladesh-US relations. He thanked Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and US President Donald Trump for their support of the initiative.
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright also termed the agreement a historic advancement in bilateral relations.
Officials from the Bangladesh Embassy and senior representatives of the US Department of Energy were present at the signing ceremony.
