Bangladeshi journalist Debashish Dutta, 3 family members killed in Kolkata hotel fire
A journalist from Kushtia, Debashish Dutta (39), along with his wife, infant son and father-in-law, has died in a devastating fire at a residential hotel in Kolkata, India. The other deceased are his wife Afsana Shimmin (29), their three-year-old son Sharnashish Dutta and his father-in-law Akram Hossain (64).
Debashish Dutta was serving as the acting editor of the local Kushtia daily Ajker Alo. He was also the Kushtia correspondent for Ajker Patrika and Channel Nine. It is known that he was in India for medical treatment with his family members.
Gaziah Mahbubur Rahman, editor and publisher of the daily Ajker Alo, confirmed the deaths of Debashish Dutta and his family members. Indian media outlets, including PTI and NDTV, also reported on the fire at the residential hotel in Kolkata.
It is learned that Debashish Dutta and his family members, who were staying at the hotel, could not get out after the fire broke out. News of their deaths came later. However, the exact cause of the fire and the details of the incident were not immediately known.
News of Debashish Dutta's death has cast a pall of gloom over the journalist community in Kushtia.
Al Mamun Sagar, former president of Kushtia Press Club, said it is hard to accept the sudden death of Debashish. He was not only a skilled journalist but also a kind-hearted person. His death has deprived Kushtia of a talented journalist.
Meanwhile, relatives are mourning the loss of four family members in the same incident. Debashish Dutta's colleagues and local journalists have expressed deep grief over the deaths of his family members.
