Bangladeshi killed by Khasi's gunfire at Sylhet border
A Bangladeshi youth named Saddam Hossain, 38, was killed in firing by Indian Khasias in the border area of Companiganj upazila in Sylhet. He is the son of freedom fighter Kutu Mia from Lama Uttama village of the upazila. His relatives said that even after five days of the incident, his body is still lying inside India.
According to family and local sources, Saddam's body was taken away by Khasias after he was shot on the other side of the border on Wednesday (April 1). The relatives alleged that the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) had not returned the body till Sunday morning (April 5).
According to the sources, Saddam Hossain and some others went to Rajnatila area of India to fetch betel nut, about 600 yards inside pillar number 1247 of the border on Wednesday. At that time, the Khasias, the owners of the betel nut garden, opened fire on them. Saddam was killed on the spot and his companion Farhad Mia was injured. Later, the other companions brought Farhad to Bangladesh with bullet wounds.
The deceased's elder brother Nazim Uddin said, "Four people including my brother went to India. There, the Khasias opened fire and he died on the spot. His body has not been brought back yet. The BGB has been contacted in this regard."
Confirming the truth of the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Companiganj Police Station Shafiqul Islam said that it is known that the Khasias opened fire on them after they crossed the border and entered India. Saddam died inside India after being shot. His body has not been handed over yet.
He also said that as per the rules, the process of bringing back the body must be completed through a flag meeting between the BSF and the BGB.
Abul Kalam, commander of the local Uttama BGB camp, said that discussions are underway with the BSF to bring back the body of the deceased Bangladeshi.
