Bangladeshi killed in BSF firing at Thakurgaon border, two held

A Bangladeshi man was reportedly shot dead by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) while allegedly attempting to cross into India through the Bairchuna border area of Thakurgaon.

The incident took place at the district's Pirganj early Sunday (September 13). Two others were detained in the incident.

The deceased was identified as Ashadul Haque, 35, of Indrail village in Pirganj. The two detained men were identified as Mustakin, 38, and Uda Chandra Roy, 35, from the same village.

According to local sources, the three men attempted to enter India through the border late Saturday night. BSF personnel allegedly opened fire at them, leaving Ashadul critically wounded. He died from his injuries, while the other two were detained.

The area is guarded on the Bangladesh side by the Bairchuna border outpost of Border Guard Bangladesh’s 42 Battalion, while the Basudevpur BSF camp of India’s 121 Battalion operates across the border.

Ashadul’s body was reportedly taken to a morgue in India by Indian police on Sunday.

Thakurgaon Additional Superintendent of Police Khodadat Hossain said police had heard about the casualties. Lt Col Abdullah Al Moin Hasan, commander of 42 BGB’s Dinajpur Battalion, said authorities were looking into the incident.
