A Bangladeshi youth was allegedly shot dead by members of India’s Border Security Force (BSF) along the Amjhol border in Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat district.

The deceased was identified as Khademul Islam, 28, son of Amzad Hossain of North Amjhol village.

The incident took place near sub-pillar 8 of international border pillar 905 under Gotamari Union on Wednesday night (May 13).

According to local residents, Khademul and several others went near the barbed-wire fence along the border when BSF personnel allegedly opened fire from across the border.

Khademul sustained bullet injuries in several parts of his body.

His companions later rescued him and took him to a private hospital in Rangpur, where he died later that night.

His body was brought back to his home on Thursday morning.

Confirming the incident, Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Imam, commanding officer of the Lalmonirhat Battalion (15 BGB), said authorities were working to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The matter is being investigated and details will be disclosed soon,” he said.
