Bangladeshi student killed in truck accident in New York

A Bangladeshi student, Nishat Jannat, 19, was killed after being struck by a truck while crossing the street in Woodside, Queens, New York, on Sunday midnight (March 30).

Nishat was a student at City College of New York and also worked as a receptionist at a parking garage on Jamaica’s Parsons Boulevard.

According to police, a garbage truck traveling west along Roosevelt Avenue struck her while turning right onto 62nd Street. Emergency responders declared her dead at the scene. The 38-year-old female truck driver sustained minor injuries and was treated on site.

Nishat, originally from Uttar Ghar Gaon village of Golapganj in Sylhet, moved to New York with her family eight years ago. Her father, Helal Uddin, serves as imam at Baitul Jannah Mosque. She is survived by three sisters.

Her funeral prayers will be held at Baitul Jannah Mosque after Zuhr on Tuesday, with burial in New York.

The New York Police Department’s Highway District Collision Investigation Squad is investigating.

The truck’s owner, Royal Waste Services, and its parent company, West Connections, are cooperating with authorities and expressed condolences over the incident.
