A Bangladeshi expatiate woman was brutally beaten to death with a hammer at a convenience store in Fort Myers of Florida.

The victim has been identified as Yasmin, a Bangladeshi expatriate living in Fort Myers.

The incident took place around 7:14am at the D&D Convenience Store on Thursday (April 2), when the attacker attacked with a hammer at a convenience store in Fort Myers.

Emergency responders from the Fort Myers Fire Department and Lee County EMS rushed Yasmin to the scene but she was declared dead at 7:27am.

Police said the suspect, a man with a reported history of mental illness, first vandalised a vehicle outside the store before attacking Yasmin when she stepped out. CCTV footage shows him wearing a yellow graphic T-shirt, black shorts, and carrying a backpack.

A large-scale search involving K-9 units and the Lee County Sheriff’s Aviation Unit was launched, and nearby schools were placed on lockdown. The suspect later fled but was identified and arrested by the Fort Myers Police Department.

Authorities indicated he may be linked to an unsolved homicide on Hough Street.

Yasmin was from Kushakhali Union, Chandraganj in Lakshmipur district. Her death has deeply affected the Bangladeshi community in Florida and across the United States.

Police continue to investigate and have urged residents to remain vigilant.
