Bangladeshi worker dies following stairs fall amid missile alert in Saudi Arabia

A 25-year-old Bangladeshi man from Raipura, Narsingdi, died after falling down the stairs of his residence in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, while rushing downstairs amid panic over a missile reportedly launched from Yemen.

The accident occurred at a residential building in Jeddah early Tuesday (September 15). Later that afternoon, a person who was staying with the victim contacted his family by phone and informed them of his death.

The deceased, Saurav Islam, was the only son of Amirul Islam and Renu Begum of Muchapur village in Muchapur Union of Raipura upazila. He worked as a tea boy at a bank under the Alsaime Company in Jeddah.

According to relatives, Saurav had been working in Jeddah for around five years. He had returned to Saudi Arabia about a year ago after spending a holiday in Bangladesh.

Early Tuesday morning, Saurav went to the rooftop of the building where he lived. At that time, he reportedly heard an alert on his mobile phone and learned that a missile launched from Yemen was heading towards Jeddah. Panicked, he hurried down the stairs.

His relatives said a wire or rope became entangled around his foot as he was descending, causing him to fall on the stairs. He suffered a serious head injury and lost a large amount of blood.

People staying with him later woke up and found Saurav lying injured and covered in blood. Local police were informed and arrived at the scene before taking away his body.

Bangladeshi expatriates said Saudi police are carrying out the necessary legal procedures in connection with the incident.

Saurav’s father, Amirul Islam, who is devastated by the loss of his only son, said, “He was my only son. Now I want to see his face and perform his burial with my own hands. I appeal to the government to arrange for my son’s body to be brought back to Bangladesh as soon as possible.”

Raipura Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mohammad Masud Rana said, “I have heard about the incident. No one has contacted us so far. If they contact us, we will provide the necessary assistance.”
