A Bangladeshi youth has been seriously injured by a rubber bullet fired by India's Border Security Force (BSF) along the Shreenathpur border in Maheshpur upazila of Jhenaidah. The incident occurred early Tuesday morning in the Mohindra border area of India.

The injured Rubel Hossain, 31, is the son of Mojibul Khan of the Shyamkur Mathpara village in the border area of the upazila.

Local sources and BGB sources said Rubel, along with several others, was near the border adjacent to the Shreenathpur BOP (Border Outpost) early Tuesday. At that time, BSF members patrolling the Mohindra border area on the Indian side fired rubber bullets towards them, seriously injuring Rubel. Immediately after the incident, his companions rescued him and brought him back into Bangladesh territory. He was first admitted to the neighbouring Jibannagar Upazila Health Complex. As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Dhaka in critical condition for advanced treatment.

When contacted, Major Towasin Habib Hasan, Additional Director of Jhenaidah-58 BGB Battalion, said they have learned that Rubel was struck by a rubber bullet in the chest. The matter is being looked into.

He said necessary measures will be taken by the BGB regarding this unfortunate border incident.
