Bangladeshi youth killed by gunfire in Libya
A young man from Madaripur was killed by mafia gunfire in Libya while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe, reportedly after falling victim to human trafficking.
The deceased, identified as Jibon Dhali, 22, son of Kalam Dhali of Jaiyar village in Mustafapur Union, Madaripur Sadar Upazila, died on September 8. His family was informed of the tragic incident on Thursday (September 18), triggering a wave of mourning across the village.
According to family and local sources, Jibon had left Bangladesh about six months ago with hopes of a better future in Italy. He was reportedly persuaded by Rasel Khan, an alleged human trafficking broker from Jhikarhati village in Ghatmaji Union of the same upazila. Upon arriving in Libya, Jibon was kept in a so-called “game house” — a term often used for detention centers run by traffickers — for several months.
He was killed by gunfire from a local mafia group while attempting to make the perilous journey across the Mediterranean Sea, his companions informed the family via phone.
Locals expressed grave concern over the increasing number of similar incidents involving young men being trafficked and ultimately losing their lives in foreign lands. “Many youths are falling victim to brokers and dying in this way. We urge the government to extend financial and legal support to the family of the deceased,” a local resident said.
When contacted, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Adil Hossain of Madaripur Sadar Police Station confirmed the incident and highlighted the ongoing police operations against human trafficking networks.
“Many young men from different regions, including Madaripur, are dying at the hands of traffickers while trying to reach Europe via Libya. Legal action will be taken against those involved if a written complaint is submitted,” he said.
