Bangladeshi-origin Dolly Begum sworn in as Canadian MP
Bangladeshi-origin politician Dolly Begum has been sworn in as a Member of Parliament in Canada, marking a significant milestone in the country’s federal politics.
Dolly Begum secured victory in a by-election from the Scarborough Southwest riding as a candidate of the Liberal Party of Canada. Her win further strengthens the party’s position in Parliament under Prime Minister Mark Carney.
In a statement shared on social media following her swearing-in, Begum described the moment as an honour and a privilege, pledging to serve the people of her constituency and contribute to national policymaking.
She said her priorities include addressing key community concerns, improving affordability, ensuring accessible housing, and working toward a more inclusive and prosperous Canada.
Begum has been actively involved in community and political work in the Scarborough region for years. Prior to entering federal politics, she served three terms as a Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) in Ontario, elected in 2018 and 2022 as a candidate of the New Democratic Party.
Born in Bangladesh’s Moulvibazar, Begum moved to Canada at the age of 12. She later completed her undergraduate studies in political science at the University of Toronto and earned a master’s degree in development administration and planning from University College London.
Her swearing-in marks a new chapter as she takes on responsibilities at the federal level, focusing on representing her constituents and advancing public policy.
