Bangladeshi-origin US citizen placed on 2-day remand
A Dhaka court has granted a two-day remand for Enayet Karim Chowdhury, a Bangladeshi-origin American citizen, in connection with his alleged involvement in a conspiracy to overthrow the interim government.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Atikur Rahman issued the remand order on Monday. Enayet was produced before the court from jail on Saturday, following his arrest on charges under the Anti-Terrorism Act filed by Ramna Police.
Police Inspector Akhtar Morshed had applied for a seven-day remand to interrogate Enayet, while Sub-Inspector Azizul Hakim formally submitted the application. The court scheduled the remand hearing for Monday and directed that Enayet remain in custody until then.
During the hearing, Additional Public Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon supported the police’s request for the remand. The defense counsel, Farhan Md. Araf, opposed it and filed bail applications. After considering the arguments, the magistrate approved a two-day remand for further questioning.
According to police sources, Enayet Karim was found driving suspiciously in a Prado vehicle on Saturday morning. When stopped and questioned by the police, he failed to provide satisfactory answers. Subsequently, he was taken into custody, and two iPhones were seized from him. Authorities claim the devices contained substantial evidence of conspiratorial activities against the government.
Further investigations revealed that Enayet is a contracted agent of a foreign intelligence agency. During interrogation, he admitted to working toward destabilizing the caretaker government, citing its fragile position and strained relations with the military. He allegedly aimed to facilitate the formation of a new national or caretaker government by secretly meeting with senior government officials, influential political leaders, and prominent business figures.
Enayet Karim Chowdhury, who migrated to the United States in 1988 and acquired US citizenship in 2004, reportedly entered Bangladesh on September 6 as part of a foreign intelligence operation to orchestrate the caretaker government’s overthrow. He was arrested from the Montripara area near Minto Road after a week-long investigation.
