Bangladesh's constitution is strong against all discrimination: Speaker

Jatiya Sangsad (JS) Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury MP said the constitution of Bangladesh is in a strong position against all kinds of discrimination.

She said, "The four principles of the constitution of Bangladesh: democracy, nationalism, secularism, and socialism, which promote equality and equal rights."

A press release received in Dhaka on Wednesday (March 27) informed that the Speaker came up with these remarks while delivering a speech as a panel speaker at the event titled 'Protection of Minority Rights' held on the occasion of the '148th IPU Assembly' at the Geneva International Convention Center in Switzerland on Tuesday afternoon (local time).

At the beginning of the speech, the speaker said, "March 26 is the Independence Day of Bangladesh. We are celebrating the 53rd year of independence."

She paid tribute to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and all the brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives for independent and sovereign Bangladesh.

Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury said, "The preamble of the constitution clearly mentions that the goal of the state is to build a society free from exploitation and discrimination where equality, rule of law, fundamental freedom, human rights, and political, economic and social justice will be secured for all. Articles 27, 28, and 31 of the Constitution mention equality under the law, equal rights for all, and the right to seek refuge in law."

She said, "Bangladesh respects all international conventions including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. There is a need to adopt an anti-discrimination law."
