The United States has stated that the future of Bangladesh will be determined by its people. The country is currently facing various challenges, and it is the actions of the people that will decide how these problems will be addressed. This statement was made by US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce during a regular press briefing on Tuesday (April 15).

In response to a question about the recent political and social situation in Bangladesh, Tammy Bruce said, "The future of Bangladesh will be determined by its people. They are facing many challenges, as you have pointed out, and we have seen in various reports. Elections are extremely important. I don't want to downplay that, but it is true."

She further stated, "Democracy is also important. It is the people's actions that will decide how they deal with these issues. Over the last 20-25 years, we have seen how wrong decisions can destroy the lives of the people. Many countries now have a clear path ahead — they will have to decide what alternatives they will choose."

During the briefing, the topic of an arrest warrant being issued against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's niece and former UK minister Tulip Siddiq was also raised. In response, Tammy Bruce said, "An arrest warrant has been issued against British MP Tulip Siddiq. This arrest warrant has been issued by Bangladesh's courts. Of course, these matters and what you are discussing, including protests, etc., are matters for the Bangladesh authorities, and our communication and discussions with them are important."

A journalist raised concerns about the recent protests, attacks on various stores and brands, and the rise of radical Islamic terrorism in Bangladesh. The journalist claimed that reports from outlets like The New York Times suggested the rise of Islamic extremism during the interim government led by Dr Yunus. The journalist mentioned that protesters were displaying images of Osama bin Laden and Nazi symbols, and anti-Semitic propaganda was being directed at American brands like KFC and Coca-Cola. There were also allegations that some close associates of the interim government were fueling these tensions.

In response, Tammy Bruce said, "I have heard your statement and appreciate your concerns. Bangladesh is an important country, and it has some unique challenges. We have discussed about this country many times before, especially through the questions raised by journalists here."

The US State Department spokesperson emphasized that Bangladesh's internal matters are under the jurisdiction of local authorities. However, the United States views communication and discussions with Bangladesh as important. She also stressed the importance of the democratic rights and choices of the people of Bangladesh, which will play a key role in shaping the country's future.
