Banned Awami League leader attends mother's funeral in handcuffs
Ayub Babu, a leader of the banned Awami League, attended his mother's funeral in handcuffs after being released on parole from jail for five hours in Patiya, Chattogram, on Monday night, June 22.
Babu, a former mayor of Patiya municipality and vice-president of the upazila Awami League, was granted parole from 9:00 pm to 2:00 am following a request from his family to the district administration after his mother, Amjuman Ara Begum, 80, passed away on Monday afternoon.
He was brought to Patiya from Chattogram Central Jail under police escort and attended the funeral around 9:30 pm. A video shared on social media showed Babu with handcuffs on one hand during the funeral.
Babu asked for prayers for his mother and expressed regret that he could not serve her. After the funeral, he had dinner at home before being taken back to jail.
Police said Babu faces at least six cases and has been in jail since April 29, 2025.
Patiya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ziaul Haque said the parole was granted for the funeral, and the leader was taken back to jail after the designated time.
