Banned Chhatra League banner appears at Jagannath University gate

A banner promoting a discussion meeting organised by the banned Chhatra League’s Jagannath University unit was found hanging at the university’s Gate 4 on Saturday morning (August 29).

The banner announced a virtual discussion to mark August 15 as “National Mourning Day” and the 51st death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

It named former prime minister Sheikh Hasina as the chief guest of the programme.

Sheikh Rifat Abdullah, joint general secretary of the Jagannath University Chhatra League unit, said the banner was put up as part of publicity for the discussion programme.

Claiming that the university unit was one of the Bangladesh Chhatra League’s “super units,” Rifat said its role had become stronger during difficult times.

He also said the organisation would soon launch a large-scale programme focusing on the rights of general students and those whose academic activities had allegedly been disrupted because of their association with Chhatra League.

Rifat further claimed that Bangladesh would return to a democratic path and emerge from what he described as “darkness” with Sheikh Hasina’s return.
