A banned political group carried out 17 crude bomb explosions in different areas of the capital in the last 11 days, said Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner SM Sazzat Ali.

He disclosed the information at a press conference held at the DMP Media Centre on Tuesday, November 11, regarding the current law and order situation in Dhaka.

The DMP Commissioner said, “Between November 1 and 11, a banned group carried out 17 crude bomb blasts in Dhaka. Besides, nine vehicles were set on fire in the last two days.”

He further said that 50 people had been arrested in connection with the incidents in the last two days, and 17 cases had been filed so far. Since October, two banned groups and their affiliated organisations have staged 14 flash processions in the capital to mark their presence.

Sazzat Ali said, “Some individuals are coming from outside Dhaka in exchange for money, taking part in the processions, and then returning. CCTV footage shows that these explosions are being carried out early in the morning or during rush hours by people wearing helmets and masks. Even underage boys are being used in these explosions.”

He said a total of 552 people had been arrested in connection with these incidents since October.

When asked about the announced ‘lockdown’ programme on November 13, the DMP Commissioner said, “There is no security risk or cause for concern in Dhaka. A large number of law enforcement personnel will be deployed, and Dhaka residents will also resist any disorder through their alertness.”
