A student of Barishal University (BU) was found hanging inside his locked rented room near the campus, with police suspecting he had died at least two days before his body was discovered.

The deceased was identified as Uchchash Karmakar, a student of the university's Department of Geology and Mining from the 2018–19 academic session.

According to police and local sources, Uchchash had been staying in a mess at the Khalpar area adjacent to the university. Fellow boarders became suspicious after his room remained locked from the inside for several days. On Tuesday night, they alerted police after a strong foul smell began coming from the room.

A team from Barishal Metropolitan Police's Bandar Police Station broke open the door and recovered the student's body hanging inside the room around 11:30 pm.

Assistant Proctor of Barishal University Dr Gazi Md Sakhawat Hossain said the university's proctorial team rushed to the scene after being informed. Police later sent the body to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital for an autopsy.

Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam of Bandar Police Station said the condition of the body suggested the student had died at least two days earlier. However, the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the autopsy and completion of the investigation.

The incident drew teachers, students and members of the university's proctorial body to the scene, casting a pall of grief over the campus.
