The murder of Jagannath University student and Chhatra Dal leader Jobayed Hossain was planned nearly a month in advance, police have revealed. The information came from interrogation reports, said Bangshal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rafiqul Islam.

“Jobayed’s student, Barsha, and her boyfriend Mahir Rahman planned the killing. They started the plan on September 25,” the OC said. “On the day of the murder, Mahir was accompanied by two friends. They bought two new switch blades for the attack. Mahir stabbed Jobayed repeatedly, while Barsha instigated him to kill.”

He added, “This was a premeditated murder by Barsha and Mahir. They had been in a relationship for nine years, but Barsha recently grew close to Jobayed. When she refused Mahir and expressed her feelings for Jobayed, Mahir became furious. Later, when Barsha told Mahir she no longer liked Jobayed, the two plotted to kill him.”

OC Rafiqul Islam further said, “Initially, Barsha denied the plan, but after being confronted with Mahir, she confessed. They began planning from September 25 on how to get rid of Jobayed. So far, four people including Barsha have been detained, and the case is being finalised.”

Jobayed Hossain was a student of the Statistics Department (2019–20 session) at Jagannath University. He also served as president of the Cumilla District Student Welfare Association and was a convening committee member of the university’s Chhatra Dal unit.

For the past year, Zobaed had been tutoring Barsha in physics, chemistry and biology at her residence; Roushan Villa, 15 Nur Box Lane, Armanitola in Old Dhaka. On Sunday around 4:45 pm, he was stabbed to death on the staircase of the building’s third floor. Blood stains were found along the stairs, and his body was discovered lying face-down on the landing.
