Begum Rokeya University tops Bangladesh in research ranking

Begum Rokeya University has secured the top position among Bangladeshi universities in research, according to the ranking by Spain's education and research institution, Scimago Institutions.

Scimago Institutions has published its 2026 ranking covering 10,827 universities across various countries. Based on country-wise ranking data, Begum Rokeya University has surpassed other prestigious universities in Bangladesh to claim the first position in the research category. In the 2025 ranking, Begum Rokeya University was placed seventh.

According to Scimago's website, the ranking is published by reviewing results across three indicators: research, social impact and innovation. The institution publishes separate rankings based on these three indicators as well as an overall ranking combining all. For the overall ranking, research is weighted at 50 per cent, innovation at 30 per cent and social impact at 20 per cent.

The ranking data shows that a total of 47 public and private universities from Bangladesh have been included. In the overall position across all three categories, Begum Rokeya University and Rajshahi University are placed sixth. However, in the university category for research, Begum Rokeya University has secured first place, Dhaka University is fourth and Rajshahi University is eleventh.

Professor Dr Md Ferdous Rahman of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering department at Begum Rokeya University, who is included in the list of the world's top two per cent researchers, said research is a primary function of a university. The current university administration is giving importance to this aspect, and efforts to transform Begum Rokeya University into an international standard institution will always continue.
