BERC withdraws tariff hike for up to 75 units of residential electricity
The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has withdrawn the recently approved electricity tariff hike for residential consumers using up to 75 units, effectively keeping existing rates unchanged for this category.
The decision was announced on Thursday (June 4) in a press release signed by BERC Secretary Md. Nazrul Islam Sarkar.
According to the statement, the revised higher tariffs for residential lifeline users (0–50 units) and the first slab (0–75 units) will not be implemented, and previous rates will remain in effect.
Under the existing structure, energy charges for lifeline consumers (0–50 units) will remain at Tk 4.63 per unit, while the first slab (0–75 units) will continue at Tk 5.26 per unit, the commission said.
BERC noted that the decision will reduce revenue for distribution companies, and the shortfall will need to be adjusted through additional government subsidies.
The revised order will take effect from June billing cycles and will remain in force until further notice.
