BFUJ condemns attack on journalists
Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) on Saturday condemned the attack on on-duty journalists in the capital. At least 10 journalists have been attacked and injured while trying to cover the clashes between the BNP and police in Dhaka’s Kakrail intersection.
Among the injured are--Dainik Kalbela Correspondent Rafsan Jony, Breaking News crime reporter Kazi Ihsan bin Didar and Staff Correspondent Ahsan Habib Shobuj, Dhaka Times Correspondent Salekin Tarin, Daily Ittefaq’s Sheikh Nasir, Bangla Tribune's Salman Tareque Shakil, Bangla Tribune and Daily Inqilab photojournalist FA Masum.
The activists snatched their camera and mobile phones and damaged those. Of the injured, five have been admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
BFUJ issued a statement in this regard signed by its President Omar Faruque and Secretary General Dip Azad on Saturday.
It said: "The journalists were taking the scene while the BNP men, who attended the grand rally called by the party on Saturday, vandalising and setting on fire in different spots in the capital. For that, the BNP activists got aggrieved and attacked the journalists."
BFUJ urged the home minister to launch an intervention into matter and demanded exemplary punishment for the attackers.
BNP activists clashed with police at the Kakrail intersection near the party’s planned rally at Naya Paltan on Saturday afternoon.
The BNP called a day-long, nationwide hartal on Sunday in response to the clashes.
