BGB assures assistance to family of pregnant teacher killed in truck collision

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has held a meeting with the family of Sumanti Chakma, a pregnant schoolteacher who was tragically killed after being hit by a BGB truck in Sajek, Rangamati. During the meeting, the BGB assured financial assistance, educational support for her child, and other forms of cooperation to the grieving family.

The meeting was held at the Marishya Zone office of the 27 BGB in Baghaichhari on Monday afternoon. It was attended by BGB officials, upazila administration representatives, local elected officials, education department officers, relatives of the deceased teacher, and local dignitaries.

Sajek Union Parishad Chairman Atulal Chakma stated that the meeting was organized following local demands for compensation after the teacher's tragic death. During the discussion, the BGB announced several support measures for the family.

He mentioned that 100,000 taka was handed over to the family on the day of the accident, and an additional 400,000 taka will be provided by next Sunday to complete the religious rituals. The BGB has also taken full responsibility for the education of the deceased teacher's eight-year-old daughter, Prapti Chakma. Furthermore, an assurance was given that her brother would be provided an employment opportunity in the BGB upon passing his HSC examinations, provided he meets the physical fitness criteria.

Additionally, it was disclosed that work is currently underway to install speed breakers at six risky locations on the Sajek road to prevent such accidents in the future.

On Saturday morning, Sumanti Chakma, an autorickshaw passenger, was killed when a BGB truck collided with the vehicle in the Champatali area of Sajek. She was an assistant teacher at Dab Adam Government Primary School in Sajek Union. She was being transported from Sajek to the Khagrachhari Modern District Sadar Hospital for childbirth. Her unborn child also died in the accident.

During the meeting, Commander of the Marishya Zone of BGB, Lieutenant Colonel Jahidul Islam, stated that the BGB will remain by the side of the deceased teacher's family. He emphasized that necessary assistance will be provided to ensure the education and future of her young daughter.

Baghaichhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Amena Marjan also described the incident as extremely tragic and stated that the administration would extend all necessary support to the family of the deceased teacher.
