BGB outpost disappears due to Padma river erosion in Kushtia
The Udaynagar Border Outpost (BOP) in Kushtia’s Daulatpur Upazila has been completely washed away by the receding waters of the Padma River.
The erosion, which began on the night of Thursday, September 11, caused the entire camp to disappear into the riverbed.
Ahead of the erosion, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel and all equipment had been relocated to Char Chilmari BOP for safety, preventing significant damage.
The area is now being monitored from the Char Chilmari BOP.
Lieutenant Colonel Mahbub Murshed Rahman, commander of the 47th BGB Battalion, expressed concern that the remaining part of the BOP could also be at risk of disappearing quickly.
The Water Development Board (PAUBO) had previously warned of potential erosion at 17 locations along the Padma and Gorai rivers. The erosion worsened as water levels receded, and despite efforts to protect the Udaynagar BOP using geo bags, the structure ultimately could not be saved.
Rashidur Rahman, Executive Engineer at PAUBO’s Kushtia office, confirmed that erosion has started in several other areas, including Daulatpur and Bheramara, and is being closely monitored.
