BGB seizes gold worth Tk 1.93 crore in Jashore, Indian national held
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has detained an Indian national along with 900 grammes of gold and foreign currency in Jashore. The total market value of the recovered gold and foreign currency is Tk 1,93,42,011.
The detainee, Wajid Ali, is the son of Amin Ahmed Ansari of Bhiwandi area in Thane district, Mumbai, India.
BGB conducted an operation on a passenger bus in the Taraganj area on the Jashore-Narail highway in Sadar upazila early on Wednesday, April 22, and detained him, said 49 BGB Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Golam Mohammad Saiful Alam Khan at a press briefing in the afternoon.
Acting on secret information, a BGB team took position in the Taraganj area on the Jashore-Narail highway around 5:00 am on Wednesday. During a search of a passenger bus, they detained Wajid Ali and recovered 900 grammes of gold paste and currencies of the United Arab Emirates, Azerbaijan, India and Bangladesh.
The BGB commander said Wajid is involved with an international gold smuggling ring. He has travelled multiple times since 2024 through India, the Middle East, Egypt and Bangladesh. On April 20, he flew from Mumbai to Dubai and then came to Dhaka, from where he was heading to Satkhira by road. He had planned to enter India through the Bhomra land port.
After interrogation, Wajid Ali will be handed over to Jashore Kotwali Model Police Station along with the gold and foreign currency.
