Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has urged citizens to assist in preventing the infiltration of illegal firearms into the country by sharing information with authorities.

In a statement issued on Monday, BGB's Public Relations Officer, Md. Shariful Islam, said intelligence reports suggest that certain unscrupulous groups are attempting to smuggle illegal weapons into Bangladesh with the aim of disrupting law and order.

Based on internal intelligence, BGB has conducted a series of operations over the past three months, resulting in the seizure of a significant cache of illegal arms. These include 16 locally-made and foreign pistols, 2 revolvers, 2 submachine guns (SMGs), 5 rifles, 16 homemade guns, 3 shotguns, 3 mortar shells, 8 hand grenades, 27 other weapons, 21 magazines, and 1,003 rounds of ammunition.

To curb these activities, BGB has intensified both intelligence surveillance and field operations along the country’s borders.

The agency has also requested public cooperation in this effort. Citizens are encouraged to report any information related to illegal arms trafficking by calling BGB’s toll-free number: 01769600555.

“Public awareness and cooperation are vital in safeguarding national security,” the statement emphasised.
