Bir Protik Taramon Bibi being remembered on 7th death anniv today
The nation observes the seventh death anniversary of Bir Protik Taramon Bibi today, paying tribute to a legendary woman whose bravery became an enduring symbol of the '71 Liberation War. She breathed her last on December 1, 2018, at her home in Kacharipara under Rajibpur Upazila of Kurigram. She was 61 years old and had serious respiratory issues. She was laid to rest with full state honours.
Born in 1957 in Kurigram, Taramon Bibi joined the Liberation War at just 14. She began by cooking for freedom fighters, supplying food, hiding weapons, and collecting intelligence. Eventually, she learned to operate rifles and fought on the front lines, earning recognition as a fearless combatant.
Despite being awarded the 'Bir Protik' title in 1973, she remained unaware of the honour for 25 years due to poverty and isolation. Her recognition came in 1995 when then–Prime Minister Khaleda Zia formally presented her the gallantry medal. She is one of only two women in Bangladesh to receive the title.
Researchers Bimal Kanti Deb and Prof. Abdus Sabur Faruqui helped rediscover her legacy, while writer Anisul Hoque documented her life in "Bir Protik’er Khojey", later inspiring his drama "Korimon Bewa."
Across Kurigram and the country, tributes are being paid to her unwavering courage, patriotism, and sacrifice—qualities that have immortalized Taramon Bibi in the nation’s history.
