Bird strike forces Indigo flight to return to Nagpur
An Indigo Airlines flight bound for Kolkata from Nagpur was forced to return shortly after takeoff due to a bird strike, narrowly avoiding a potential tragedy. The incident took place on Tuesday, September 2.
According to Abid Ruhi, Senior Director of Nagpur Airport, the aircraft encountered a bird strike mid-air soon after departure. “The flight had just taken off from Nagpur Airport when it had to return immediately as a precautionary measure,” Ruhi told PTI and India TV. “We are currently investigating the incident and will release further details after the inquiry.”
The flight, carrying between 160 to 165 passengers, has been canceled. Indigo Airlines has arranged alternative flights for affected travelers.
In an official statement, Indigo Airlines said, “Flight 6E812 from Nagpur to Kolkata experienced a bird strike shortly after takeoff today. As a safety measure, the pilots decided to return to Nagpur Airport. The aircraft is undergoing a thorough inspection. Consequently, today’s flight has been canceled.”
Bird strikes, which occur when birds or bats collide with aircraft in flight, are a common hazard for aviation and can sometimes cause severe damage to planes. There have been numerous incidents worldwide where bird strikes have led to crashes and fatalities.
