BNP activist hacked to death in Bagerhat, attackers cut off right hand

A BNP worker was hacked to death in Morelganj upazila of Bagerhat. The attackers severed his right hand and took it with them, police said.

The incident took place in Boulpur village of Hoglapasha union of the upazila on Monday night (May 18).

The deceased, Mintu Sheikh alias Mithu Sheikh, 45, is the son of Ahed Sheikh of that village. He was a member of BNP in Ward No. 9 of Hoglapasha union.

Morelganj Police Station OC Md. Mahmudur Rahman said that Mintu Sheikh was returning home after tending to the banana plantation next to his house. A group of miscreants who had been waiting in ambush on the way blocked his path and hacked him indiscriminately with sharp weapons, seriously injuring him.

The OC said that the attackers severed his right hand from his body at that time. Later, local people rescued him in critical condition and took him to Bagerhat District Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

Mehedi Hasan, General Secretary of Morelganj Upazila BNP, said, Mintu Sheikh was a dedicated worker of the party. We demand the immediate arrest of those involved in the murder and exemplary punishment.

Police said, the body of the deceased has been handed over to the family after the autopsy. An investigation is underway to uncover the reason behind the murder.
