BNP activist killed in Mymensingh, Jamaat leader's son arrested
A BNP activist was stabbed to death in Mymensingh city, following which police arrested four individuals, including the son of a Jamaat-e-Islami leader.
The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon, June 2, in the Char Ishwardia Madhyapara area of Ward 31.
The deceased was identified as Rana Mia, 28, a local autorickshaw driver . He was taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police arrested Mahmudul Islam Mahin, 20, son of Jamaat-e-Islami working committee member Mofidul Islam, along with Tofazzal Hossain, 40, Humayun Kabir Akash, 23, and Monirul Islam, 24 . Mahin has been identified as the primary suspect in the fatal stabbing.
The victim's elder brother, M Mofazzal Hossain, filed a murder case with Kotwali Model Thana naming 10 individuals and another 10-12 unidentified suspects .
According to family members, tensions had been ongoing since the last national election, when Rana Mia campaigned for the BNP candidate, straining relations with the Jamaat leader's family . A quarrel following a football game reportedly escalated the dispute, leading to the attack the following day.
The family further alleged that a group of 50-60 people carried out the attack, during which Mahin stabbed Rana in the chest.
Jamaat leader Mofidul Islam denied the allegations, claiming neither he nor his son was present at the scene. However, Mymensingh-4 MP Abu Wahab Akand Wahid stated that Rana was an active BNP worker and called for the swift arrest and trial of those involved .
Kotwali Model Police Station OC Muhammad Shibirul Islam said an investigation is ongoing, and efforts are underway to arrest other suspects.
