BNP dissolves local committees in Nur’s constituency
The Bangladesh Nationalist Party has dissolved the Galachipa and Dashmina upazila BNP committees in Patuakhali-3, Galachipa–Dashmina, the constituency where Gono Odhikar Parishad president Nurul Haque Nur is contesting with BNP support.
The decision was taken through a statement signed by BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Saturday, January 17, said Patuakhali district BNP General Secretary Mujibur Rahman Toton. Letters in this regard were sent to the district BNP president and general secretary, with copies forwarded to divisional leaders.
Party sources said the BNP did not field a party candidate in Patuakhali-3 and instead extended support to alliance partner Nurul Haque Nur. However, allegations surfaced that a section of the Galachipa and Dashmina upazila BNP units ignored the party decision and carried out election campaigning in favour of recently expelled independent candidate Hasan Mamun. Leaders believe the two committees were dissolved in this context.
No specific reason was mentioned in the official letter dissolving the committees. Mujibur Rahman Toton said they had received the dissolution order but declined to comment further due to the absence of an explanation.
District Jubo Dal acting general secretary and BNP nomination aspirant Shiplu Khan said they were working for Nurul Haque Nur in line with party decisions. He added that organisational action had been taken against those who defied party directives and supported the expelled candidate. He also noted that instructions could come to form a new election management committee if necessary.
Previously, the Dashmina upazila BNP president was Abdul Alim Talukdar and general secretary Shah Alum Sanu. The Galachipa upazila BNP president was Bir Muktijoddha Siddiqur Rahman and general secretary Bir Muktijoddha Sattar Howlader.
Commenting on the dissolution, Galachipa upazila BNP president Siddiqur Rahman said action against activists working for an expelled candidate was expected. However, he also said they were still with expelled candidate Hasan Mamun.
