BNP faction clash leaves Chhatra Dal leader dead in Chattogram
A clash between two factions of the BNP in Mirsharai of Chattogram, left a Chhatra Dal leader dead from stab wounds, while five others were reportedly injured.
The deceased, Gazi Tahmid Khan, 20, son of Alamgir Hossain from Uttar Hinguli, had previously served as the Organising Secretary of Islami Chhatra Andolan’s Zorawargonj Thana unit and later as Joint Secretary of Mirsharai’s Safe Roads Movement.
Recently, he had been active in the Baraiyarhat municipal BNP student wing.
The incident took place at Baraiyarhat municipal market on Wednesday evening (December 10).
Tahmid succumbed to his injuries around 12:30am at Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
According to police and local BNP sources, Tahmid had attended a milad programme organised by the student wing for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s recovery. After the event, a verbal altercation escalated into a violent clash between supporters of former municipal BNP president Didarul Alam Niyazi and another faction, during which Tahmid was stabbed.
He was initially taken to a local private hospital and later shifted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where he died.
Didarul Alam Niyazi claimed the incident was personal, not political, while BNP’s Mirsharai candidate Nurul Amin said the clash stemmed from a dispute in the market involving a local business owner, not intra-party politics.
Kazi Nazmul Haque, officer-in-charge (OC) of Zorawargonj Police Station, said, "The altercation led to multiple injuries and that an investigation into this matter is underway."
